Start with what Microsoft manages and what you manage
Cloud services change responsibility; they do not remove it. Microsoft's shared-responsibility guidance distinguishes provider-managed infrastructure from customer responsibilities such as identities, access, and data. Your endpoints and business workflows still matter. [S11]
An email platform can be operating normally while an employee uses an unmanaged laptop, an old administrator account remains active, or a malicious inbox rule goes unnoticed. Those problems require decisions and follow-through outside a subscription purchase.
Review the actual tenant, not the product family name
Inventory licenses, administrators, authentication methods, connected applications, external sharing, and the devices used to access work. Ask what is enforced rather than what is available. A feature that exists in a product brochure may not be enabled, appropriately licensed, or configured for your users.
Then identify an owner for reviewing risky activity, responding to alerts, handling account recovery, and changing permissions when people move roles. Decide which work remains with your staff and which is assigned to a provider. Do not buy a second product until you understand the gap it is intended to close.
Test three everyday situations
Imagine a finance employee approving a fake sign-in request, a former employee retaining access to a shared application, and a project folder being deleted. Ask how the current setup would detect, contain, and recover from each event. These are planning scenarios, not claims about a particular Microsoft product's performance.
A useful answer should cover identity controls, the device involved, investigation ownership, communication, and recovery. A promise that the account "has MFA" is not the whole answer when fallback methods, connected apps, and active sessions have not been considered.
Separate security from data recovery
Email filtering, account protection, retention, and backup address different needs. Microsoft offers a Microsoft 365 Backup service for supported workloads, so the right question is not whether Microsoft has any backup capability. It is what recovery service your organization actually uses and whether its scope fits your requirements. [S09]
Review your chosen recovery approach alongside the file-recovery and backup-testing guides. A secure login does not restore a deleted record, and a usable backup does not prevent an account compromise.
Decide whether additional management adds value
An internal team may already operate these controls effectively. An MSP may add value when responsibilities are unassigned, specialist help is needed, or response coverage is incomplete. Ask Blue Tree Technology® to assess the tenant and recommend a defined scope. The objective is not to stack more licenses onto Microsoft 365; it is to make the protections you rely on work together and remain accountable.
